For me, true inspiration is when I can’t take my eyes of something because it is too beautiful or sometimes truly ugly/vulgar. I watched Marie Antoinette for the first time and I couldn’t remember feeling that intoxicated by a film in a long time. It is difficult to describe the aesthetic and perhaps that is the point, the film is not one single element but everything combined. This inspiration is truly the beautiful filled with lashings of colour, costumes, sets, scenery & cinematography. Sofia Coppola’s film, Marie Antoinette would be the perfect film to study for all its mise-en-scene glory. Think cool flick juxtaposed with an amazing soundtrack!
Written, directed and produced by Sofia Coppola, the 2006 movie Marie Antoinette is a loosely based biography on Marie Antoinette, Queen of France and explores the themes of love, choice, rebellion, expectation, privilege and power.
